Give Thanks in All Things… Really?

The following is from The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom.  This is an outstanding book about two sisters, who were true Christians, and how they really learned to rely on their Heavenly Father.  It was their Bible and doing their best to live the teachings contained in it that helped them through some of the worst of human conditions.

Corrie and her sister were prisoners in Ravensbruck, a concentration camp during WWII, with wrenched conditions.  They had already survived so much, but the conditions of the final barracks were well beyond what they thought they could bear -- including a thick infestation of fleas in the straw they were to sleep on.  Corrie turned to her sister and cried, "Betsie, how can we live in such a place!"  Immediately Betsie began to pray and soon the answer came to her.  They had read it in the Bible just that morning "Give thanks in all circumstances."  Betsie was sure this was the answer.  Corrie recounted the scene as follows:
"Betsie Said, "We can start right now to thank God for every single thing about his new barracks"
I stared at her, then around me at the dark, foul aired room.   "Such as?" I said.
"Such as being assigned her together."
I bit my lip, "Oh Yes, Lord Jesus!"
"Such as what you're holding in your hands."
I looked down at the Bible.  "Yes!  Thank You, dear Lord, that there was no inspection when we entered here! Thank You for all the women here in this room who will meet You in these pages."
"Yes," said Betsie.  "Thank You for the very crowding here.  Since we're packed so close, that many more will hear.  She looked at me expectantly, "Corrie!" she prodded.
"Oh, all right.  Thank You for the jammed, crammed, stuffed, packed suffocating crowds."
"Thank you," Betsie went on serenely, "for the fleas and for--"
The FLEAS!! This was too much.  Betsie, there's no way even God can make me grateful for a flea."
"'Give thanks in All circumstances,'" she quoted.   "It doesn't say in pleasant circumstances.  Fleas are part of this place where God has put us."
And so we stood between piers to bunks and gave thanks for fleas.   But this time I was sure Betsie was wrong.
Because they began from that moment on the to thank instead complain, they had positive attitudes and became a very positive influence on the others in their barracks.  As their world grew blacker with evil outside the barracks, their world inside (even with the fleas) became brighter until it became as a literal Heaven on earth despite the conditions.   What made the difference?   They read the Bible, no just to themselves, but to those around them; soon all gathered at the end of everyday to hear the word of God.  Even more important they all tried to apply the teachings as they looked for light in a black world.  Many came unto Christ as a result.  The women in the barracks quit being rude and mean to each other and replaced it with love and kindness.

Normally these barracks had surprise inspections where their precious Bible that brought so much light and strength would normally have been seized.  Miraculously, they never had such inspections.   Much later they found out it was because their barracks were so flea infested that the guards dared not enter.  The fleas allowed them to have God's Word for their strength and their hope.  Upon learning this, Corrie very humbly knelt and truly thanked God for the fleas!
We should also give thanks in all circumstances!  As with Corrie's, we may learn that the very "fleas" that we saw as only a plague to our lives are the very things that allow God to bless us with the things we need most.
Gratitude is more than just being grateful for the good things in life. It is an attitude of happiness and making the best of all circumstances. Life will always be a series of adventures in applying gospel principles, especially that of loving and forgiving all.

give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Flying Like an Eagle or Living like a Turkey?

One of my favorite verses in the Bible is:
To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Colossians 1:27

Look at what God has done for the believer in Jesus… He has planted His Son in us.  And now Jesus wants to live His life through you and me.  This revelation was once hidden but now has been revealed.  This is so unbelievable, that most Christians only see themselves as “poor sinners” instead of our True Identity in the Lord Jesus.  He has adopted us, seated us in the heavenlies, called us His sons and daughters.  Some of the last stuff we learn as followers of Jesus is who we are in Christ.  Consider the following story.

The story is told of an old Indian man who found an eagle's egg, which he placed into a nest of prairie chickens.  The eagle hatched with the chicks and grew up with them. Thinking he was a chicken, the eagle did what the chickens did.  He scratched in the dirt for seeds and insects.  He clucked and he cackled.  He flew in a brief thrashing of wings and a flurry of feathers, but he never got more than a few feet off the ground because he thought he was just a prairie chicken and wasn't supposed to fly.
As time passed, the eagle matured.
One day he looked up into the sky, and high above him he saw a magnificent bird hanging with graceful majesty on the powerful currents of air.  He marveled at how the bird soared with scarcely a beat of its wings. "What a beautiful bird," the eagle clucked to his prairie chicken neighbors.  "What is it?" "That's an eagle -- chief of all birds," cackled one of the chickens.  "But don't you give it another thought.  You could never be like him. "And so the eagle, thinking he was just a prairie chicken and not able to soar into the heights, lived his life groveling and picking at the ground, never experiencing the exhilaration of flight and the majesty which was his by birthright.

Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.  -Isaiah 40:30-31

FYI: Islam and "NO GO" Zones

Islam and "NO GO" Zones

On September 2, The New York Times published an opinion piece by Yale University's Eliyahu Stern titled, "Don't Fear Islamic Law in America."

The article compares the fight against Sharia law to anti-Semitism and depicts it as being based in anti-Muslim bigotry. On the contrary, the campaigns to ban Sharia-based judicial rulings actually protect Muslims who love the U.S. and the values that define it.

At least a dozen states are considering outlawing Islamic arbitration tribunals where Muslims can voluntarily settle their disputes according to Sharia law. As Daveed Garteinstein-Ross notes, there are similar courts for Jews and they are not used as criminal courts. However, there is a danger that an Islamist judge will be able to push his interpretation of the faith from the bench, and that Muslims will feel forced by their communities to use Sharia courts. Islamist groups have also promoted Sharia courts as part of an incremental strategy to bring about Sharia-based governance.

The Center for Security Policy has found 50 examples in 23 states "where Muslim-Americans had their cases decided by Sharia Law against their will." In one case, a Trial Court judge ruled based on Moroccan Sharia law, even though those involved were not Moroccans or even Muslims.  In Tampa, FL, a judge ruled that a dispute between two Muslim parties would be solved in accordance with Sharia, overruling the objections of the one party. There is also the notorious New Jersey case where a judge exonerated a Muslim man of raping his wife because Sharia allowed him to do so. The ruling was later overturned.

"These families came to America for freedom and from the discriminatory and cruel laws of Sharia. When our courts then apply Sharia law in the lives of these families, and deny them equal protection, they are betraying the principles on which America was founded," the study says.

To see the problems posed by Sharia courts, one only needs to look at Europe, where they have been established. The Civitas think tank in the United Kingdom found that the country has at least 85 of them.

"Among the rulings...we find some that advise illegal actions and others that transgress human rights standards as they are applied by British courts," the report said. It mentioned a case where a Muslim woman was not allowed to marry a non-Muslim. In one incident, a Sharia councilman dismissed a woman's complaint that her husband hit her once, saying "it's not a very serious matter."

It determined that Islamist forces are promoting the courts. "Despite all efforts to package Sharia's civil code as mundane, its imposition represents a concerted attempt by Islamists to gain further influence in Britain," it concludes.

The creation of Sharia courts is part of Islamist programs elsewhere in Europe and in the U.S. There is a concerted effort by Islamist groups to create Sharia enclaves within the United States, as well as in Canada and Western Europe. For example, a Spanish National Intelligence Center report warns that foreign money is helping Islamists to create "parallel societies" that include Sharia courts "that operate outside of Spanish jurisprudence."

European 'No-Go' Zones for Non-Muslims Proliferating "Occupation Without Tanks or Soldiers"

In a lecture presented to a young Muslim audience at the University of Western Sydney on Friday 30 March 2001, the prominent Australian Muslim leader Dr Zachariah Matthews was  discussing the role of 'migration' (Hijrah) in the 'phases' of  dawah (i.e. the stages involved in proclaiming and establishing Islam).  One of the aspects of establishing Islam through migration, he argued, is to secure local sovereignty, as modeled by the Muslim community when they migrated from Mecca to Medina. Matthews taught:

"The Hijrah ['migration'] to Madinah provided the Islamic Dawah with one very important thing, land, or a territory over which Muslims could have political sovereignty. The Hijrah made the Muslims Masters of their own internal affairs, external relations and matters relating to war and peace."  (The Hijrah: a necessary phase in the Dawah)

What does it mean in practice when migrant communities establish local territory in which Muslims are masters of their own internal affairs?   Is the theological principle of establishing local sovereignty the ideological wedge which is so successfully subverting multiculturalism throughout the lands of migration?

The following article by Soeren Kern suggests that the answer to this question may well be 'Yes'.

Islamic extremists are stepping up the creation of "no-go" areas in European cities that are off-limits to non-Muslims. Many of the "no-go" zones function as microstates governed by Islamic Sharia law. Host-country authorities effectively have lost control in these areas and in many instances are unable to provide even basic public aid such as police, fire fighting and ambulance services.

The "no-go" areas are the by-product of decades of multicultural policies that have encouraged Muslim immigrants to create parallel societies and remain segregated rather than become integrated into their European host nations.

In Britain, for example, a Muslim group called Muslims Against the Crusades has launched a campaign to turn twelve British cities – including what it calls "Londonistan" –  into independent Islamic states. The so-called Islamic Emirates would function as autonomous enclaves  ruled by Islamic Sharia law and operate entirely outside British jurisprudence.

The Islamic Emirates Project names the British cities of Birmingham, Bradford, Derby, Dewsbury, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Luton, Manchester, Sheffield, as well as Waltham Forest in northeast London and Tower Hamlets in East London as territories to be targeted for blanket Sharia rule.

In the Tower Hamlets area of East London (also known as the Islamic Republic of Tower Hamlets), for example, extremist Muslim preachers, called the Tower Hamlets Taliban, regularly issue death threats to women who refuse to wear Islamic veils. Neighborhood streets have been plastered with posters declaring "You are entering a Sharia controlled zone: Islamic rules      enforced." And street advertising deemed offensive to Muslims is regularly vandalized or blacked out with spray paint.

In the Bury Park area of Luton, Muslims have been accused of "ethnic cleansing" by harassing non-Muslims to the point that many of them move out of Muslim neighborhoods. In the West Midlands, two Christian preachers have been accused of "hate crimes" for handing        out gospel leaflets in a predominantly Muslim area of Birmingham. In Leytonstone in east London, the Muslim extremist Abu Izzadeen heckled the former Home Secretary John Reid by      saying: "How dare you come to a Muslim area."

In France, large swaths of Muslim neighborhoods are now considered "no-go" zones by French police. At last count, there are 751 Sensitive Urban Zones (Zones Urbaines Sensibles, ZUS), as they are euphemistically called. A complete list of the ZUS can be found on a French government website, complete with satellite maps and precise street demarcations. An estimated 5 million Muslims live in the ZUS, parts of France over which the French state has lost control.

Muslim immigrants are taking control of other parts of France too. In Paris and other French cities with high Muslim populations, such as Lyons, Marseilles and Toulouse, thousands of Muslims are closing off streets and sidewalks (and by extension, are closing  down local businesses and trapping non-Muslim residents in their homes and offices) to accommodate overflowing crowds for Friday prayers. Some mosques have also begun broadcasting sermons and chants of "Allahu Akbar" via loudspeakers into the streets.

The weekly spectacles, which have been documented by dozens of videos posted on Youtube.com, and which have been denounced as an "occupation without tanks or soldiers," have provoked anger and disbelief. But despite many public complaints, local authorities      have declined to intervene because they are afraid of sparking riots.

In the Belgian capital of Brussels (which is 20% Muslim), several  immigrant neighborhoods have become "no-go" zones for police officers, who frequently are pelted with rocks by Muslim youth. In the Kuregem district of Brussels, which often resembles an urban war zone, police are forced to patrol the area with two police cars: one car to carry out the patrols and another car to prevent the first car from being attacked. In the Molenbeek district of Brussels, police have been ordered not to drink coffee or eat a sandwich in public during the Islamic month of Ramadan.

In Germany, Chief Police Commissioner Bernhard Witthaut, in an August 1 interview with the newspaper Der Westen, revealed that Muslim immigrants are imposing "no-go" zones in cities across Germany at an alarming rate.

The interviewer asked Witthaut: "Are there urban areas – for example in the Ruhr – districts and housing blocks that are "no-go areas," meaning that they can no longer be secured by the police?" Witthaut replied: "Every police commissioner and interior minister will deny it. But of course we know where we can go with the police car and where, even initially, only with the personnel carrier. The reason is that our colleagues can no longer feel safe there in twos, and have to fear becoming the victim of a crime themselves. We know that these areas exist. Even worse: in these areas crimes no longer result in charges. They are left 'to themselves.' Only in the worst cases do we in the police learn anything about it. The power of the state is completely out of the picture."

In Italy, Muslims have been commandeering the Piazza Venezia in Rome for public prayers. In Bologna, Muslims repeatedly have threatened to bomb the San Petronio cathedral because it contains a 600-year-old fresco inspired by Dante's Inferno which depicts Mohammed being tormented in hell.

In the Netherlands, a Dutch court ordered the government to release to the public a politically incorrect list of 40 "no-go" zones in Holland. The top five Muslim problem      neighborhoods are in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht. The Kolenkit area in Amsterdam is the number one Muslim "problem district" in the country. The next three districts are in      Rotterdam – Pendrecht, het Oude Noorden and Bloemhof. The Ondiep district in Utrecht is in the fifth position, followed by Rivierenwijk (Deventer), Spangen (Rotterdam), Oude Westen      (Rotterdam), Heechterp/ Schieringen (Leeuwarden) and Noord-Oost (Maastricht).

In Sweden, which has some of the most liberal immigration laws in Europe, large swaths of the southern city of Malmö – which is more than 25% Muslim – are "no-go" zones for non-Muslims. Fire and emergency workers, for example, refuse to enter Malmö's mostly Muslim Rosengaard district without police escorts. The male unemployment rate in Rosengaard is estimated to be above 80%.

When fire fighters attempted to put out a fire at  Malmö's main mosque, they were attacked by stone throwers.

In the Swedish city of Gothenburg, Muslim youth have been hurling petrol bombs at police cars. In the city's Angered district, where more than 15 police cars have been destroyed, teenagers have also been pointing green lasers at the eyes of police officers, some of whom have been temporarily blinded.

In Gothenburg's Backa district, youth have been throwing stones at patrolling officers. Gothenburg police have also been struggling to deal with the problem of Muslim teenagers burning cars and attacking emergency services in several areas of the city.

According to the Malmö-based Imam Adly Abu Hajar: "Sweden is the best Islamic state."

TIME

TIME... Really isn't on your side

Consider the following on TIME by Stan Allen

TIME: don't waste it
TIME: it was the best of times
TIME: it was the worst of times
TIME: you can find time, lose time, waste time or make time
TIME: time can be passed, worn, zoned, exposed, tabled, framed, lapsed, capsuled and even honored
TIME: but when you're time is up...
TIME: how to get more time? borrow on time and make payments? it's tough to get a time loan even though there is a time share
TIME: there's a time clock, time lock and time out
TIME: though you can't stop time's forward motion, some think of a time machine, that takes you back in time, and those come with messy time-continuums (whatever they are)
TIME: some say you can squeeze more time in: it's called Overtime: and it comes in time and 1/2 and double time (the latter is time after time, or time and time again)
TIME: there are time savers, people who try to prevent others from killing time, and others who end up with no time, which kind of makes us timeless (or as some would say puts us in a time-warp)
TIME: I hope your paying attention, there will be a test of time, which never seems to have enough time to study for or finish
TIME: You should definitely pay attention to the Signs of the Time by reading the Times or even Time... because time will tell
TIME: and now my time's up... because it really is finite
by Stan Allen

God has much to say to us regarding the TIME, He has given us, which Really is His Gift, consider the following from the Bible:

·        TIME as it refers to “day” (Heb. “yom”)

·         TIME: a general usage of time – Josh 8:29; Job 39:1-2; Dan 9:21; Ezk 16:8
·        TIME: one time – Gen 18:32; Ex 9:27; Prov 7:12
·        TIME: obscure, hidden time, indefinite – Josh 24:2; Deut 32:7; Prov 8:23;
·        TIME: an occasion, set time, opportunity

·        TIME: Redeem the Time, because the Days are Evil - Eph 5:16
·        TIME: Redeem the Time because You Have Been Redeemed - Col 3:17,23
·        TIME: Redeem the Time, Because Today is the Day of Salvation – 2 Cor 6:2
·        TIME: Redeem the Time Because Life is Short - James 4:14
·        TIME: Redeem the Time Because Man has an Appointed Time - Heb 9:27
·        TIME: Redeem the Time and Make it Count for Eternity -  Mt 25:14-30
·        TIME: Eccles. 3:1-8 There is a TIME for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:

a TIME to be born and a time to die,
a TIME to plant and a TIME to uproot,
a TIME to weep and a TIME to laugh,
a time to mourn and a TIME to dance,
·        TIME: 2 Cor. 6:2 "In the TIME of my favor I heard you,  and in the day of salvation I helped you."  I tell you, now is the TIME of God's favor, now is the day of salvation.
·        TIME is coming when He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." Rev. 21:4
·        by God
TIME: It's Definition: a period during which an action, process or condition exists
TIME is our most precious commodity
TIME is not limitless (60 seconds every minute, 60 minutes every hour, 24 hours every day, 365.25 days every year) – 2 Pet 3:4

"Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man's life is but a breath. Selah
Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it. Psalms 39:4-6

TIME use yours wisely... there's only so much you have.

Death of a Friend

The story is told of Dr. Albert Einstein, the great physicist who has been honored by Time magazine as the Man of the Century. Einstein was once traveling from Princeton on a train when the conductor came down the aisle, punching the tickets of every passenger. When he came to Einstein, Einstein reached in his vest pocket. He couldn't find his ticket, so he reached in his trouser pockets. It wasn't there, so he looked in his briefcase but couldn't find it. Then he looked in the seat beside him. He still couldn't find it.

The conductor said, "Dr. Einstein, I know who you are. We all know who you are. I'm sure you bought a ticket. Don't worry about it." Einstein nodded appreciatively. The conductor continued down the aisle punching tickets. As he was ready to move to the next car, he turned around and saw the great physicist down on his hands and knees looking under his seat for his ticket.

The conductor rushed back and said, "Dr. Einstein, Dr. Einstein, don't worry, I know who you are. No problem. You don't need a ticket. I'm sure you bought one."

Einstein looked at him and said, "Young man, I too, know who I am. What I don't know is where I'm going."

Like all good stories come to an end, so will we.

Today we buried my brother and friend, Doug Denton.  The line to the cemetery was impressive with a police escort, and multiple Union township trucks an employees.  It was suppose to be a small, family gathering but it swelled into a crowd.

Doug was a follower of Jesus.  He loved his wife and family, he served at Crossroads (especially in our Facilities ministry), attended weekly Bible study and went on a short-term missions trip a number of years ago.  He is already missed. But he knew where he was going.  At the center of the Christian life is Jesus.  He is our joy.  On the periphery of our lives there may be troubles, but at the center the follower of Jesus have joy.  The BIG questions of identity, purpose and destiny are all answered in the person of Christ.  The non-believer & pagan may have moments of joy, but only on the periphery, through the distractions and amusements (a-negates; muse to think about) of life, but these are passing.

For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 1 Timothy 6:7

At the center of the pagan's life is great apprehension and worry.

"because the sinner is in revolt against God, he does not experience the fear of death as a fear of separation from God, but rather as a fear of separation from life" Rousas Roshdooney

Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
